Chapter twenty-three: The meaning of life

Mael sat patiently against the examining table watching the drawers that contained the bodies of the dead. He felt he would take on the task since his Brother was out of commission for a while. The gesture seemed overly kind for someone that had used words like: prick bastard and son of a bitch, to describe their sibling but in truth he was delighted to have his Brother back in the fold as it were. He had tried for so long to force Adrian into accepting his other half, his better half as he saw it.

Now that he had sired a mate for himself it would not be long before he gave up his ridiculous lust for human life and joined the rest of his kind in the love of night and blood. Mael smiled at the thought. “Finally we are at peace…” He muttered. He glanced at his watch; it was after 1:00 am. He had left Adrian’s and come straight to the morgue to work. About an hour had passed perhaps since he gotten there.

A slight scratching began from one of the drawers and drew the Vampire King’s eyes. When a sudden and loud thump came, it did not start him, he watched with unblinking eyes. There were ten so-called infected bodies in this morgue; Mael expected them all to come around at the same time. Sure enough the other nine drawers began to creek and thump. “You must be very weak if you cannot get out.” He said with a smirk.

“I’ll give you a hand…” And he did, Mael raised his hands up in front of him with the palms turned in toward him and paused. With a quick fluid motion he fisted both hands and all ten rattling drawers flew out and hit the floor. He walked slowly, leisurely to the writhing corpses. And they were truly nothing more than that. Un-able to form words or even sit up, they were monsters, sick twisted mirror versions of the divinity his blood created. He almost pitied them.

He knelt down to get a better look at one, it was a young girl; she was no more than fifteen of sixteen. He could tell that though this vessel writhed and squirmed as if it lived, there was no soul in it. Whatever kept it alive was not an individual soul but perhaps a single powerful being controlling it like a puppet. He found however they did have basic protective instincts because the girl sat up and clamped her little jaw on his arm. He winced but watched with interest as it fed on his blood, a smiled curled his lip slowly.

“A Vampire should know better than to drink from one more powerful…” He mused and cocked his head. The girl did the same and he laughed with great pleasure. He raised his hand and she did the same, he opened his mouth and she did the same. “Never under estimate the devil…” He cackled and moved to feed the others his blood and bring them under his command as well. When he was finished and successfully enlisted all ten corpses, he went back to the first girl.  “Give me your wrist.” He commanded gently and she gave him her wrist.

He bit into the risen vein there and drank in the knowledge of her mind and blood. His eyes widened at what he saw. The giver of the drug was not male as he had assumed, he had assumed it was Doryan. No… it was a woman and she was tall…blond.

Meanwhile
“Millenia, where are we going?” Camael asked tensely from the back of the car. “To my earthly home, come Camael, you cannot be in such a hurry can you? It will only take a minute.” Millenia said from the driver’s seat. “I can’t tell you why I am here until we get there, there are so many spies listening to us, you would be rather surprised if you knew who was watching you.” She said. Apolon was strangely quiet and nervous acting, playing with his chains. He sat in the back with Camael despite the fact the front passengers’ side was free.

Millenia turned the radio on to an alternative station and started to bob her head as they drove. Apolon finally leaned toward Camael and tapped his hand to get his attention silently. “I feel there is… something wrong here.” He whispered then moved back to his original position when he noticed Millenia glancing toward the rearview mirror. There was a funny smile on her lips. “You two have grown close I see. I wouldn’t have thought it possible. I told the Dominion they were mad when they paired you two and sent you to earth…” She commented.

“We get along well enough.” Camael said watching the road and trying to pinpoint where exactly they were headed. They had gone out of the city for several miles and there was little else but dark roads and dirt to look at. “Why do you live so far out here, Millenia?” Apolon asked watching the endless signs pass by. “It is quiet and away from the noise of the human world.” She answered. “Why do you have need of a human dwelling when you are supposed to be commanding the Powers?” Camael asked.

“I enjoy the human world and I like to visit from time to time. Come Camael, why are you questioning me so? I feel as if you suspect me of something, like you do not trust me. I am your Sister, remember?” Millenia said knitting her brow. “I was simply asking…” Camael replied calmly but he didn’t trust her, somehow he felt there was something not quite right. The very act of using the car when they could easily have reverted to their spiritual form and flew seemed odd. He guessed she wanted mortal travel so they could not be tracked by the Dominion… did that mean there was a traitor among the higher ranks?

They pulled down a long driveway that led to what appeared to be an old abandoned factory… a very odd place to keep a mortal dwelling, Camael thought. The car stopped and Millenia got out, she waited for Camael and Apolon to get out but Apolon stilled Camael for a moment. “There is something very wrong here.” He said. “Yeah,” Camael answered and slipped out of the car. Millenia regarded then with a strange look and then started toward the dilapidated old building.

Most of the windows were broken out, glass littered the ground everywhere. It looked as if it hadn’t been touched in many years aside from gangs who marked most of the outer walls with graffiti. Camael felt a knot building in his stomach; he didn’t want to believe his own Sister would be a betrayer but… God help him he didn’t trust her. She led them through the large shutter door that was rusted open and into the middle of the gutted factory. She waved her hand, the shutter came slamming down. “I don’t want anyone to hear us…” She said noting the fear in Apolon’s eyes.

“Millenia, what is going on?” Camael asked stepping forward. “Is there a betrayer in the ranks of the Dominion?” He pressed. She smiled; it sent a chill down his spine. “I am sorry Camael, my Brother.” She muttered and pulled a glittering thing from her side, he hadn’t noticed the small sheath there. She held the object up; it was a dagger of sorts, gold and bejeweled. “The nameless one bestowed me this… made from his own horns. It was a gift before the fall, before you chose human life over theirs.” Her tone was bitter, cold.

“Is there a betrayer here you ask? Yes, indeed and it is you, Camael. You make me sick you hypocrite. You sent my beloved to the depths, into eternal darkness and emptiness for little less than what this one,” She pointed to Apolon, “does daily. You care for him so he stays, is that not right? Tell me I am wrong!” Millenia shouted. Her face was twisted in furry. The only look Camael gave was one of pity. “So you and Hanzazal were lovers…” He mused. “That is correct; we shared earthly love together… until you sent him to the void.” She gritted out.

“He was murdering humans… the earthly pleasures you shared with him he shared with multiple humans and killed them while doing so… just like he is doing now.” Camael stated coldly, no mercy in his voice; he despised that demon more than even Apolon knew. “The humans corrupted his mind as they did with others… why were they punished for the sins of the humans? It doesn’t matter now… by now Hanz has destroyed the Lyfeng and his bitch and after that he will destroy the King.

Mael was supposed to be the crowning achievement of the Lord of Princis, the hitch in the wheel of time to throw the balance off. A fist in the face of our creator to show we would not stand by and allow mankind to reap all pleasures and goods from this world… but your meddling ruined that too, so I feel no sorrow for what I am about to do, dear Camael. Not a bit.” Millenia raised the blade in her hand. “As your silver takes the life of demons so shall this gold take the life of Angels. You shall not be well received in the void, Camael, not at all!” She shrieked and lung forward.

One strike from the blade meant death, as she said; the Powers had weapons of silver that destroyed even the immortal soul, Princi created the same from the horns of dead brethren. Apolon flew before the attacking woman and took the blow she had meant for his partner. “No you idiot!” Camael gasped. Apolon stumbled back with the blade sunk deep in his gut. It left Millenia without a weapon. “You… can’t… kill me with this.” Apolon gritted out between clenched teeth. Camael looked a bit stunned but only for a moment, then his gaze was on the betraying Angel.

His eyes narrowed and turned dark. The two Powers stood off, shed their human forms to do battle. “It matters little what you try now, Camael… my Vampires are at this very moment flooding the city streets, murdering and filling the Heaven’s and Void with souls… the end is near for this world!” Millenia cackled. “I beg to differ.” A rumbling, amused voice spoke. Camael and Millenia both turned. And there stood the Vampire King, arms crossed and posture lax. “I will be the one to decide when the world ends… that is my birthright after all.” Mael said gently.
