Chapter Seven

Bethany couldn’t help but find it strange that Loken had all but disappeared. Her anger toward him was now turning to worry as she heard two students saying he had transferred and wouldn’t be coming back. What had happened? Bethany wondered as she ate her candy bar in her usual break area. She would get the whole scoop from Charlie once she was out of class. Maybe it wasn’t her or him being a rude bastard, maybe something happened. Maybe there was an attempt on his life.

Bethany ruffled her wild spikes of platinum hair and waited for Charlie. She felt something of a strange nervousness about later tonight. She hadn’t quite felt right after talking to Vigil the night before. She had had strange dreams, intense dreams with him and Loken both in them. They reminded her of fever dreams where you can’t escape or make sense of what is happening. It alarmed her because she wasn’t sure what Vigil was yet and ever since she had met him she had been acting carelessly.

Asking Loken out and then asking Vigil to show her some of his tricks. She didn’t know either of them and yet in those moments she felt perfectly safe and content to put her life in their hands. It was strange and disturbing. It wasn’t impossible that she was under a thrall but by whom? Loken couldn’t be a vampire because he walked in the sun and was a public figure. Vigil… she didn’t like the idea but he was her best suspect. He was obviously abnormal, incredibly strong and fast and his eyes… they glowed.

She hated the idea, in fact the idea of not seeing him again was painful and that frightened her even more. She put a hand over her mouth and tried to keep from letting the fear take her. “Father, what have a done?” She whispered gently into her palm. Vigil had saved her from the woman in red but what if she was just a game to him? What if he was one of the old ones? It would explain his power. All her safeguards and training were worthless against him if he could so easily thrall her.

If she had no mental defense then she would have to use his arrogance against him and let him believe she was completely under his control. The idea was sour in her mind and body. She wanted to trust him with every fiber in of her being. She wanted him so completely that she could hardly consider hurting him and that was when she knew he was thralling her. Bethany had hurt a lot of people in her life being a hunter, friends, family… they all had to be hurt to keep them away and she had grown cold to it.

It was something that had to be done and yet the idea of pushing Vigil away… it was like pulling her heart from her body and watching it beat its last. Bethany barely felt Charlie’s hand gripping her shoulder as she passed around her to sit. “Hey! Hey? Are you okay?”” Charlie asked with concern. Bethany didn’t realize she had tears streaming down her cheeks. She quickly wiped them away. “Yeah, I was thinking about… Bambi, sad and all.” Bethany said and sat back into her chair.

“I’m seriously worried about you.” Charlie said, popping a soda and taking a drink. “I’ve never seen you cry.” Charlie said regarding her with worry. “It’s nothing. Hey, do you know what happened to Loken? I heard he transferred…” Bethany asked to get Charlie off the subject and to distract herself. “Oh, I heard he was whisked right out and sent to some special school for training… I don’t know, it seemed kind of shady to me too. I bet someone made an attempt on him and his father forced him to leave. He is so protective about his family, don’t ya think?” Charlie half swooned.

Bethany rolled her eyes. “Yeah… listen, Charlie, I am going to skip my last class for today. I don’t feel very well. I’ll see you back at the dorm later.” Bethany said feeling suddenly dizzy. She managed to get up but had to hold on to the table to stay steady. “B… I think you need to see the nurse.” Charlie suggested, alarmed. “No, its fine. I’m just… not myself today.” Bethany could hardly finish her sentence before unwarranted emotions began to attack her. She felt like she was going to cry and she knew if she started she would never stop.

She reassured Charlie she was fine and hurried to her dorm room, shutting and locking the door behind her before she grabbed her face with both hands and fell back against the door in tears. She could barely breath the sobs welled up so deep and loud. After the first wave passed she tried to collect herself, crawling to her bed and pulling out a large suitcase from under it. Inside she took a red bound book and started thumbing through it, wiping tears as she did so.

“H-here it is…” She muttered. She found the chapter about thralls and what to do once in one if a safeguard or mental block did not work. The problem was she could barely read the book through her tears. God, if only he was here. “No!” Bethany cried, steeling herself. She wiped her eyes and read. “Once a vampire has thralled you, it has made an intimate connection with your mind and body but your soul may still be able to battle the demon’s hold on you.

Find a safe location and safeguard it with spells and the usual methods. Use black salt to block the doorways and windows, cover yourself in silver if you can. If the vampire knows where you live, it will be more difficult. Their mental strengths are ten times a human’s and when they call, it will be a strong pull. There is no reversal of a thrall unless the vampire is dead, however the thrall is as painful for the vampire as it is for the victim, leaving them vulnerable to an attack.” Bethany dropped the book and started digging for her black salt.

She began madly pouring the fine crystals around the doors and windows then opened her jewelry box and Charlie’s and started to put on all the silver she could. Once she was done she crawled onto her bed and prayed. Something she hadn’t done in a long time. How could she be so stupid? She was desperate… desperate for contact with someone that wasn’t normal, someone that understood this bullshit, that’s why. Vigil made her feel amazing, part of something instead of alone.

She cursed herself for missing him, for being so desperate for another’s attention. Evan as she lay there in emotional agony, she wanted him, knew he would make it go way. That was exactly how the thralls worked. The human couldn’t take the stress of it and they folded, well, she wasn’t going to fold! Bastard, how dare he do this to her! She wasn’t sure if the night would be worse than the day, he would be up, he might come to her. She had better be ready she thought and opened the drawer of the nightstand near her bed. There was a silver dagger inside.

If he got past the black salt, he was dead. She would ram the silver blade into his heart as he leaned over her and that would be the end of him. Perhaps the end of a hero but one that had no right to live in this world. She clutched the dagger close as she closed her eyes and let the tiredness that was beginning to take her over, consume her. She knew her dreams would be filled with him but she had faith in herself that she would prevail, she had to otherwise she was dead.
Looks like Loken will have a big surprise waiting for him later :p Serves him right for trying to trick her. So, do you think that they will kiss and make up? I can tell you think, the next chapter is very... explosive! >D lol

Thank you for reading!
