“I guess I’ll just have to kill you for fun then…” The female said and started forward. Bethany took another shot but the woman was too fast, before Bethany could even pull her knife out, the female had her around the neck. “Worm…you are cattle to us, don’t you know that?” She hissed. Bethany pulled her knife free and rammed it into the female’s side and kicked her away. The force of the kick sent Bethany falling backward and over the side of the building. She screamed but it was cut short as something grabbed her around the waist, knocking the air out of her.

It was him, she knew it was him. ‘Vigil…!” She gasped as he took her to the alleyway below. “Stand back.” He said sharply and just as he said it, the female came crashing down to the asphalt leaving a huge crater where she landed. She stood and laughed, flicking her whip around her. “There you are…” She purred. “Watch out, she is strong…” Bethany rasped, sucking in a deep breath. “Not strong enough…” Vigil said and started toward the women. She lashed out with her whip but amazingly he caught it in one hand and started to twist it around his fist.

He then jerked it hard enough to pull it from her and tossed it aside. Bethany watched in awe as the female began to back away. In the distance, however, another figure appeared. Bethany wasn’t sure if they were on the women in red’s side or not but they started toward the fight with more speed than a human. “Vigil, look out!” Bethany called, alerting him to the male joining the fight. The male vampire attacked the woman in red. He was lean with dark hair and seemed to be solely concerned with the female until he saw Vigil.

“Come on!” Vigil commanded and grabbed Bethany around the waist. The male vampire started after them after knocking the female hard into a wall. “What… what’s going on?” Bethany gasped and struggled but she couldn’t break his hold. The male was much faster than the female but amazingly Vigil was faster than him. Bethany felt like she was going to throw up but she managed to hold it in as they bounce off walls like ping pong balls. The vampire was right on them, his claws even scraped Bethany’s foot once but then Vigil made a swift turn that actually slowed the vampire down. Bethany closed her eyes and tried to keep her stomach from protesting the wild movement.

She felt a sharp upward move and realized they were traveling up a building. Bethany looked down and saw that the vampire was not far below them. The view was enough to make her dizzy as she dangled in Vigil’s arm. She wasn’t sure how he was climbing so fast with only one free arm. Suddenly he stopped and swung Bethany around toward the side of the building. “Hold on!” He commanded in a deep voice. She did, she grabbed the edge of a windowsill and tucked up on the narrow ledge.

Vigil pulled some of the wrapping that was around his hands and wrists loose and dove at the vampire. “No!” Bethany screamed, clinging to the building for dear life as she watched him dive head first off of it. He stretched the wrap out across his spread arms, catching the vampire by the neck. He twisted and flip his body in the air and as he landed behind the vampire he then used the leverage to sling shot it down the building. Bethany watched, mouth agape, at this feat and the way he did it fearlessly. It was like his feet were stuck to the building!

When he started toward her, he was climbing normally but still with a speed and agility that baffled her. Once he was there beside her again she flung her arms around him and gripped so tightly that she thought she might hurt him. “Jesus… Jesus, don’t fucking do that again!” Bethany scolded, shaking. God she couldn’t stop shaking. “Reprimand me when we are on solid ground, alright?” He said softly and pulled her against his body. She held on to him, legs and arms wrapping around his body as tight as possible. He worked them around to the other side of the building then jumped and landed on a roof that had to have been one hundred feet below them.

He didn’t let her down until he had put at least ten blocks between them and where he had flung the vampire. Vigil let her down almost reluctantly when he finally stopped but he held her arm as if to keep her steady, then she realized why. After all the fast movement solid ground was not her friend. She felt like she had been on a boat and had to hold on to him so not to fall over. “Oh God…” She muttered and lowered herself to the ground. She was going to throw up, she knew it. She crawled a few feet away then emptied her stomach onto the roof. She was having a great day with guys….

“Are you alright?” He asked kneeling beside her. “Not really but I’ll live. Who… who were those vampires? I’ve never seen them so strong before…” Bethany managed wiping her lips and sitting back. “I’m not sure who the one in red is but the male was a Sentinel.” Vigil said grimly. “A what?” Bethany asked. “A Sentinel. They are powerful guardians of the vampire king.” He explained. “Why haven’t I ever run into one before?” She wanted to know. “They only hunt rogue vampires, the ones you have killed. They are harmless to humans.” Vigil said matter-of-factly.

“Then why the hell was he chasing us?” Bethany asked. “He was after me. I’m a curiosity of sorts to their king…” Vigil muttered. Bethany felt her stomach twist painfully. No, he couldn’t be. “Are… are you a vampire?” She asked hesitantly. “I’m just what you see, nothing more nothing less. I was born with special abilities and so I’ve been trying to use them for good but it seems I’ve garnered some unwanted attention because of it.” He said sadly. He started to walk away but she stood and grabbed him, a mistake because she nearly fell again from the dizziness.

“Shit! Wait… please.” Bethany said, holding on to him. She watched his eyes drift from her hand, which was gripping his arm, to her face. His eyes were so intensely bright it was unreal. “What do you need?” He asked watching her. Her breath caught for a moment, she wasn’t sure, she just wanted him to stick around a little longer. “I… I just want to talk. Listen, Obviously I’m not normal either. I hunt vampires too…” Bethany admitted. “I have no one to talk to, no one I can share it with… I didn’t realize you were the one killing these vampires, too. I mean, I wondered.” She added nervously.

“The Sentinels are killing the vampires… I just take out what I can when I can, that’s all.” He said but he wasn’t moving away. Maybe he felt the same? Maybe he felt alone since he was obviously some freak of nature, though in a good and productive way. “What you did back there was amazing, Vigil! You could literally save the world if you wanted to. All the vampires and Volven… all the evil humans, you could take care of them all with your skills. You… you have been making a huge difference in this city.” Bethany said.

She wasn’t sure but she thought for a moment he was embarrassed with how his stance changed. He wasn’t used to getting praise, obviously. “I wish I could be like you, I mean, it’s not like I’m not strong but… I want to help you, Vigil! Please, take me under your wing and help me to do as you do!” Bethany said, clasping her hands together. “No… no that is not a good idea, Bethany.” He said. Wow, he remembered her name. “Please, Vigil, I beg of you. I’m lost in the real world and I’m all alone in this one. Please.” She begged.

Vigil hesitated for a moment. “I’ll meet you tomorrow night for patrolling. But there isn’t much to what I do, you saw it firsthand. I don’t know what you hope to learn.” He said. “Thank you!” Bethany cried and hugged him, well, a little of him, he was huge! He didn’t touch her back. In fact she suspected he was trying to have as little contact with her as possible. She didn’t care if he was a germaphobe, she loved him for this! “Where should we meet?” She asked pulling away from him. “I’ll find you.” He said simply.

He had such an amazing voice, so commanding and deep. It gave her chills. “Alright, I’ll see you then.” Bethany said. He began to walk away but stopped and looked back at her. “I’m sure I’ll be fine walking home… I mean, as long as I don’t run into that woman again…” Bethany said nonchalantly. “If I do, well, I guess I won’t be seeing you tomorrow…” She added, tapping her lower lip with her finger. She could feel him weaken more than see it and it made her grin.

“I’ll walk you home…” He agreed. Bethany smiled and started toward the fire escape. “Thank you. At least you are a gentleman… not like some other guys in this city.” She remarked bitterly. Vigil stopped her before the fire escape and lifted her up into his arms. “We might as well do this the fast way since you know I am not like other men.” He said and his eyes flashed amusement. Bethany hooked her arms around his neck and tried to keep from drowning in those strange eyes of his but she thought she might be able to stare at them forever.

If she thought she had clicked with Loken then she was wrong, dead wrong. “You keep staring at me… is my mask that handsome?” He asked suddenly, breaking her concentration. She was so embarrassed. “Sorry… your eyes… they are really beautiful.” Bethany said and felt weird because WHO says that to a guy? He laughed. It was a deep timbre of velvet. “Thank you but I think yours might be nicer… like a clear sky.” He mused and jumped off the roof to the next building. “Oh, so you are a poetic guy, huh? I don’t know if I can trust you since you are already flirting with me.” Bethany teased.

“You started it.” He accused, picking up speed, sailing to the next building and then the next after that. By the time they were back at the dorm Bethany was so preoccupied with his nonsense that she wasn’t even sick this. He stopped in the outside courtyard and set her down. She was a little disappointed it hadn’t taken longer. “I think you are safe now.” He said quietly. “Thanks… normally I don’t need an escort.” Bethany muttered sheepishly. “Well, I’m considering this a perk of the job.” He said and laughed.

Bethany reached up slowly and urged his head down as she rose up on her toes and pressed a very gentle kiss where his lips would be beneath the mask he wore. His entire body went tense, each muscle solidifying into ridged steel beneath her hands. When she pulled away his eyes were wide with surprise. She was a little surprised she had done it too. “One more perk for you…” Bethany whispered and then took a few steps back. Was this that chemical reaction people talked about?

She thought perhaps it was because what was between them was… she wasn’t sure but there was an intense connection somehow. She felt as if she were being pulled into him. “I… I better go. I mean… unless you want to come up?” Bethany mumbled. “I think it’s better if I go.” He said. It sounded calm enough but even Bethany could hear a strain in his voice. Well, at least she wasn’t the only one that wanted to knock boots in a bush somewhere. “Night…” Bethany breathed and finally forced herself to turn away and start walking. It was strangely difficult. The hunter in her should have been wondering why but the girl in her liked it.
