Chapter Seventeen

Bethany could have killed Loken for leaving her alone with Lurch and the other two vampires. She sat quietly sipping her juice and eating her candy. Her strength was starting to return but she was still unsure of herself. After Loken vanished up the stairs, the couple at the base stared at her and began muttering before meandering over. The female, Loken’s sister, was stunning. Her raven hair and bright blue eyes were breathtaking in person. Bethany HAD seen her on TV with her father but TV didn’t do her justice.

The male, well, she wasn’t sure about him. He didn’t look like a vampire really and as he got closer she realized he wasn’t a vampire at all but a Volven! She tried not to lurch back when they came within a few feet of her. “Hello… sorry, my brother really left in such an awkward way… I’m Isabel, you can call me Izzy. This is Haedren. Bethany could see now that ‘Izzy” had been crying. Her eyes were red rimmed and there was dried blood on her cheeks. Ew. Bethany had never been cool with the Ebola tears.

“Bethany… you can call me Beth. So… uh, sorry about your mom…” Bethany said. “Thank you… I’m sure Daddy will find some way to help her.” Izzy said leaning into the stocky blond man she called Haedren. “I’m not trying to be rude but… you are a Volven… aren’t you?” Bethany asked. Haedren nodded, wrapping a muscular arm around Izzy. Bethany raised a brow. “Yeah, I used to watch these rug rats when they were kids.” He said and suddenly pulled Izzy into a headlock and knuckled her head.

“Haedy!” Izzy cried and pulled away only to come back at him with fists flying, none that would have done any damage to the mountain of muscle, mind you. “I thought Volven hated vampires?” Bethany interjected. “Oh they do but Haedren has been my Uncle’s best friend since forever so… he is honorary family.” Izzy said. Bethany nodded her acknowledgement. “You and Loken are a thing huh?” Haedren asked suddenly. Bethany smiled awkwardly. “I guess…” She muttered, not sure what to say.

“He’s marked you so… you must know what that means?” Izzy asked. Bethany fumbled for a moment, playing with her juice. “Leave the lady alone, Iz. She knows what she’s gotten into. Listen, just don’t say anything to the Master fruit bat, he is in a hell of a mood.” Haedren said. Izzy punched him in the arm. “He is terribly upset over Mom, Haedy. Don’t say mean things like that! Daddy can be a bit of a… boar, sometimes but he really has a heart of gold, Beth.” Izzy assured. Bethany smiled but she couldn’t help the chills running up her spine.

There was movement on the stairs suddenly and Bethany prayed it was Loken. It was not, however, it was his Uncle. He looked tired. “Adrian, what did Mariska say?” Izzy called, meeting him as he walked down. Bethany could tell by the look on his face the news wasn’t good. This entire event was hitting far too close to memories Bethany would have liked to keep buried. Adrian pulled Izzy into his arms and held her for a long moment. Bethany covered her mouth. Had she died??? Oh God, poor Loken, was all she could think.

Adrian released Izzy and walked her back down to where Haedren and Bethany were. “She is trying to figure out what’s wrong. Don’t worry, Isabel, she will be alright.” He said. “Haedren… we need to find this Maatheus and we need to catch one of these creatures. Mariska needs to see what it is about their bite that could cause this and yet not kill the host. She thinks there might be a link between these zombies like things and the pills Loken found.” Adrian said.

Bethany’s mind instantly started working the piece of what he said over. “Jesus, do you think those pills might… change people into those things…?” Bethany asked. Adrian raised his brow. “It’s not possible… the conversion process requires a person to be near death.” Adrian said but he looked as if he was considering the idea. “Dude, if that is the case, we are in some serious shit.” Haedren eloquently added. A commotion from upstairs drew all their attention, Bethany could hear a deep voice thundering over Loken and a female’s voice. She had the crazy notion to run and hide but fear seemed to cement her butt to the bench she was sitting on.

Adrian instinctively stepped in front of her, blocking her from view as the three came down the stairs. “I have her in stable condition, I think as long as I keep her IV pumping blood into her she should last… at least until I can figure out what this is.” Mariska said. “Adrian, I want one of those things found and I want this woman in red and Maatheus. I don’t care if you have to burn the city down, I want him.” Growled a voice that Bethany assumed was the king’s. She bit into her lip and tried to blank her mind.

“We’ll get them, Dad… I swear it.” Loken said confidently. “I’m going to go out myself and look, as well. Obviously enough attention hasn’t been paid to the matter or it wouldn’t have exploded out of control like it has!” The king said with a roar. Bethany flinched at the sound. “I haven’t been allowed to work!” Loken defended suddenly. Bethany didn’t really feel familiar enough to be privy to a family fight yet. “But you have been killing all the rogues in the city to protect that girl without orders or consent. You have been out there.” The king reminded him angrily.

“Mael, stop it. This is not Loken’s fault. I didn’t see or hear anything and neither did the others. Loken found those pills. At least we have an idea of what is going on because of him.” Adrian defended. Bethany wished she could see something but she was blocked by a few bodies. She just wanted to see the king once. Yes, she had seen him on TV as the Mayor but she wanted to know if he had horns like in the stories. “Daddy, we all know you are upset... but you can’t blame this on something you did, too.” Izzy said gently, like a mouse whisper against all the thunder. “What I did?” The king demanded.

“You dropped everything for Mom… and we all are weak to our hearts here. You know that, you can’t fault Loken for his instinct. So he fell in love at a bad time… no one can choose when they fall in love.” Izzy said. Frankly Bethany was shocked she had it in her. “You are right, pumpkin. I’m sorry, Loken… I’m… just…” The king began. Bethany heard rustling and peeked around Adian to see father and son embracing. Her heart melted a little at the sight… and damn, no horns but his hair was long, much longer than it appeared on TV.

The king’s eyes flashed open and Bethany jerked back but he must have seen her. Oh God, he had to have! She frantically looked around for an escape route but that creepy Lurch guy was at the door. “Who is that?” the king asked. Bethany felt Adrian’s hand grip her and guide her as he moved away pretending to look but keeping her hidden behind him. “Who?” He asked, looking at the now empty bench.  It would have worked perfectly too if not for her juice and candy bar wrapper sitting there.

“Oh, sorry, left my snacks there on the bench, my bad.” Haedren said quickly. “I smell a human… why are you hiding her?” The king said and started toward Bethany’s blockade. “Wait..!” Loken said suddenly. The king stopped and turned to him. “I brought…uh…” Loken stumbled. The king quickly pulled Adrian out of the way but Bethany had since moved behind Haedren. “I’m not in the mood for games!” the king roared with the force of a lion, turning his anger toward Loken.

Bethany couldn’t allow it, something in her refused to let him take the bullet to protector her. She stepped out from behind Haedren despite his clumsy attempt at keeping her there. “S-stop yelling at him..!” She cried, shocked at the tremble in her voice. She was actually terrified. The stories the hunters told about the king of vampires were horrifying. She had had a fear and fascination with him since childhood. “Who are you and why are you here…? Why was she hidden?!” the king demanded of the others. “I brought her.” Loken said.

“I’m his girlfriend and I’m here for moral support, you have a problem with that?” Bethany said, lifting her chin despite how her legs threatened to crumble under her. The king raised a brow at her, a slight smile working at his perfect lips. Loken looked panicked and instantly went to her side, standing slightly in front of her now like a shield. “I can explain,” he began but the king raised a hand to silence him. “Come to me, child. I want to hear you speak.” He said and gave Loken a look that would have frozen the bravest hunter in their tracks.

Bethany did as he asked, gripping Loken on the way by because the adrenaline wasn’t helping her lack of blood. She was still weak and now terrified. The king was huge, just like Loken but more wide and muscular. He wore a simple button up shirt and pants. Bethany had expected some cliché leather or something more… evil. He was handsome and much younger than he looked on TV. He didn’t look much older than Loken, actually. His hair was long and solid black with subtle waves throughout.

The one thing he didn’t hide on the TV were his eyes, they were still that brilliant blue. “You came here for my son, to be with him in his time of need?” he asked her. Bethany nodded slowly. She kept eye contact, never once looking away. “Of course…” She managed. She was trembling all over. She had never been so scared in her life. She was sure he was going to kill her. “You are a hunter.” He stated simply. Bethany set her jaw. “Yeah, I am. I still am but… Loken showed me it’s… it’s not black and white. I want to help him.” She explained. The king laughed suddenly. This was it, she was dead.
