Chapter twelve

Loken hadn’t really wanted to get Bethany so involved in his life… not yet anyway. Things seemed to be moving faster than either of them had intended. Bethany did have a point, though. They were bonded and now by blood. There wasn’t much that could be done now except for one of them dying. He would do anything to keep her, commonsense was a thing of the past for both of them now. Bethany was somewhat of a loner, she only had her friend Charlie to explain to, but Loken…

Well, he had an entire family to explain himself to. His father was likely to disown him for this, his mother would spend the rest of her life trying to get his father to forgive him, Isabel wouldn’t care, Auntie Abby would think it was cute and Uncle Adrian would… it was hard to say what he would feel about it but Loken knew he would be disappointed in him for acting so rashly. Adrian had said that he felt Loken would be the hope of their race…things were not off to a great start if that was the case.

What he had done to Bethany was liken to a drunken wedding in Vegas for humans, except their union was truly forever. A Mistake? Oh yes, this was an epic mistake, likely to be written down in history but not one that many other vampires hadn’t made. This was a common thing. Loken had just felt he was better than nature. Now as he looked at the girl beside him as they walked from the hotel, he knew that he would have made it a hundred times over. No matter what he thought he could do over in the past, he was lost to this future.

“Let me get my gun I stashed and we can go.” Bethany said as she walked to the Hotel’s dumpster. “Aright.” Loken said as he watched the remaining firefighters packing up their truck. The fire was out and the vampires inside would be nothing more than dust. Turned vampires were very susceptible to fire. In fact fire was what Christian used to clean up large ‘messes’ after a big raid. Loken still felt bad about getting Christian in trouble… more people that were going to be angry with him when all this came out.

“Alright, got the gun, let’s hit it. Are we walking, flying or driving?” Bethany asked as she approached him. “Flying would be faster… how did you get here?” Loken asked. “Public transit, you should try it some time. Real eye opener.” Bethany said and smiled. “Aw… come, this way.” Loken said and started down the alley away from the firefighters and the small crowd of people still lingering to watch. Bethany trotted behind and it took him a minute to realize she had to jog to keep up with his long strides.

“Sorry…” he said and slowed down. “I’m not used to doing this with a partner or a human for that matter…” he mumbled the last part. “I can keep up just fine. You don’t have to slow down.” Bethany said. Her tone most definitely peeved. “I didn’t mean it as a slight against you.” Loken explained but it was too late, he had insulted her without realizing it. “Just don’t start treating me with kid gloves, you know my history. We are equals, right?” She said. “Yes, of course… I mean, obviously I have an advantage physically but as partners we will always be equal.” He said.

Bethany grunted but didn’t argue. “So, you can actually fly? I mean, do you have wings…? I swear we were flying the night we ran into the crazy lady.” Bethany asked after a moment. “Yes… I have wings in a way. It is more like borrowing them, you could say.” Loken answered. “That sounds sketchy as hell.” Bethany laughed. He led them to the far end of the alleyway where it appeared they were alone.  “Not really. They form much like how I mended the clothes. Watch.” Loken explained and stepped a few feet away from Bethany.

With little more than a thought, the fabric of his coat began to lift and grow feathers, bone, muscle and cartilage. The coat itself grew shorter and more fitted as the fabric was used. What Bethany couldn’t see, however, was that some of his own flesh was used as well, along with blood. He slowed the process down so she could see but normally he could form them in a matter of seconds, like his father and uncle. Once it was done, he had two eight foot black wings stretching out on either shoulder blade.

Bethany looked both frightened and amazed. She circled him, reaching out hesitantly to feel the feathers. The stroke of her fingers on the new sensitive flesh was…stirring. “How… how do you move them?” She asked feeling the base of each wing and the expanse between his shoulder blades. “Muscles, bone and nerves grow inside so that it is like they have always been there. I can’t explain it but it is like I have always had them… I just know how to use them.” Loken said. It was true. The knowledge of flying was always with him.

“That’s amazing. I had no idea a Vampire could do anything like that.” Bethany said, stepping away. “Not all can, only those born from the first line have these abilities. My grandfather, father, uncle and siblings.” Loken explained. So no turned vampires have ever been made with these wings, ever?” Bethany asked, disbelieving. “One, his name was Valic but he died more than a few millennia ago… So, ready to go for a ride?” Loken asked and grinned. Bethany grinned back. “Yeah... I think so. Hopefully I won’t puke this time.” She said, blushing slightly.

“I will go slow, I promise.” Bethany gave him a look and hesitantly approached. “So, how do we do this?” She asked. Loken kneeled down and stretched his wings out. “Climb on my back, that way your weight will be even and my arms won’t go numb…” he said and smirked. She gingerly walked over and smacked the back of his head for the remark. “You are never getting any in this century, just saying.” She said and climbed onto his back, wrapping her arms around his neck for support.

Loken laughed gently and kissed her forearm as he reached back to grip her thighs and hoist her into a piggyback position. “You are perfect… there is just something about the fire that sparks in your eyes when you get teased, that’s all.” Loken said gently.  “I’ll spark your ass if you don’t knock it off. Now let’s get going before I change my mind…” Bethany snapped and cuddled in tight on his back.

From his crotched position he used his powerful legs to launch them into the air. He felt Bethany’s grip grow tighter and tighter until the first pump of his wings and they were level and soaring. “You can open your eyes now.” He said and laughed. “They have been open. Shut up…” Bethany gasped but he knew they were closed. “How can you be afraid of heights while climbing on all those buildings?” Loken asked curiously. “I’m not so much afraid of heights as I am afraid of you dropping me with your wild zipping around…!” Bethany said, venturing to peek around his shoulder.

“Wow…” She breathed. He could feel her heartbeat against his back. It began fast but now started to slow to a more steady rhythm. The city from this vantage was quite a sight to see. The city lights and moon gleamed off the tall silvery buildings and the lights from the cars looked like white and red stars moving in a line. Loken closed his eyes for a moment to see what Bethany saw and what she felt about the experience. He was pleased when he felt a semblance of joy and excitement. He wanted to look deeper but he didn’t want to invade her like that.

It didn’t take long to get where they were going. Mariska’s home and ‘clinic’ wasn’t far. No one seemed to check on these little places in the middle of the poorest districts. It was the safest place for her to set up shop. When Loken landed Bethany slipped off his back and staggered back with only minimal wobbling. “I did better… that time…” She mumbled and rested against a light post. They were across the street from the clinic and there was a small scattering of people going in. Bethany watched then raised a brow at Loken.

“Are those… all vampires?” Bethany asked. “Yes…” Loken said slightly surprised because vampires didn’t need much medical care. They headed inside and there was a decent line leading into the back and all the seats inside were full, all with vampires. “I’d say there is something wrong here…” Bethany whispered and gave Loken a look. “I’d say so. Come on.” He said and took her by the hand, leading her to the back past the line of people. Farther inside there was a check in and a door to one side. Loken went through the door.

“I don’t know, I just don’t know!” A woman could be heard saying in the back room. Loken had never seen another worker there beside Mariska but this time she had a female in a uniform at the check in desk seeing to the line of patients. The various rooms in the back were all open and looked to be filled with at least one patient. A short, dark haired woman in a lab coat came walking out of the back office and behind her was someone Loken hadn’t expected to see.

He felt Bethany run into his back as he made a sudden stop. His first instinct was to run but he was caught, not only in his Vigilante gear but also with the woman he was forbidden to see. “Loken! Great seeing, you look bigger than the last time I saw you! I’m kind of busy, give me one sec!” Mariska hollered in her usual bubbly fashion but it was obvious she was stressed.  “Sure…” Loken said then nodded his head toward his uncle and waited for the barrage of “What is wrong with you???”
Uh ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh XD Duh cat is out of the bag...

I'm lazy about reading things (just ask girl-n-herhorse) but I decided to take a look at this and I enjoyed it. I chuckled at the Vegas wedding analogy. No, I haven't read the previous chapters (as I said...lazy).  By the way, it says "crotched" where it should say "crouched" in paragraph 13. Dunno what's going on with the forbidden coupling but evidently whatever they did (some kind of sex act?) in the last chapter bonded them for life. I'll probably check that out later.
