Chapter six: Bargains by Gods for Gods
It had been several days since Persephone had been taken back to her mother, several days since she had taken the gardeners advice. How she would tell her mother what she had done she didn’t know but the day was coming. Demeter had returned to her golden self and the fields had returned to the green they had once been. All was good and happy on the earth, all but the little Goddess that sat in the tall grass and seemed lost in thought.
Demeter had not believed Persephone when she told her that she loved Hades and wanted nothing more than to return to him, Demeter had brushed it off as a brainwashing that would wear off eventually. “There are no flowers over here, Persephone! Come and wake them.” The Nymphs asked as they danced in the field. Persephone remembered when she would have gladly run to join them but now she seemed to have no will to even move. In her heart she regretted the deal she had made with Hades and wished she had never known what it was like to feel so much for someone.
Demeter was so busy with bringing the life back to the world that she had not noticed how sad and cold her precious daughter had become. Persephone laid down in the soft bed of grass and crushed the blades to smell them, and then let her eyes close as moisture came to them. The smell reminded her of the Elysian Fields and how she had kissed him there for the first time. Something passed between her and the sun and her eyes shot open instantly. “Ha…” She started but then stopped herself. Hermes smiled at her.
“You know, it is a shame to have such a pretty face so distraught. You should try smiling.” He said and pulled something from his pouch he had at his side; it was wrapped in a fine silk of blue and white. Persephone took it and looked at it for a moment. “Well? Do you not wish to know what he has sent you?” Hermes asked. She unfolded the silk gently, inside was a single flower, just the bloom and a note that read: Never wither away. Persephone wiped at the tears rolling down her cheeks. “It is from the Elysian Fields; it will never wither or die.” Hermes explained.
“Tell him, I love him and I will never wither away as long as he keeps me in his heart.” She said through a sob. She placed the flower in her hair, right near the one he had given her before. “I will tell him but I will not kiss him for you.” Hermes said with a slight smile. She laughed despite herself. “I would be too jealous of you doing that, Hermes.” She said with a slight smile. “Aw see, he will be much happier knowing you smiled at the cost of my pride.” He said and started off. “Thank you, Hermes.” Persephone said. He smiled and waved goodbye before he flew off.
“What did Hermes have for you, dear?” Demeter asked, appearing behind her daughter. Persephone grabbed her chest and turned around; her cheeks were flush from the fright. “Please, Mother, do not do that again.” She said. Demeter narrowed her eyes. “I worry now every time I see you with someone. I am afraid you will be kidnapped again.” Demeter said and embraced her daughter. “…Mother… I have got to admit something to you…” Persephone said suddenly.
“What is it?” Demeter asked pulling away. The two looked almost alike side by side. “I… I ate something in the underworld, some sort of fruit from the only living tree near Hades palace.” Persephone admitted. Demeter’s eyes grew wide and her mouth fell open just slightly. “No… no…” She repeated under her breath. “It… it does not seem to have done anything however… I am still here and I have not vanished and reappeared there…” Persephone said. She tried to hide the hint of regret in her voice.
“We must see you father about this. Hades will not have you again, I promise. You will never have to suffer like that again!” Demeter stated loudly. “He was only kind to me Mother… truly.” Persephone insisted. Demeter shook her head. “You are not in your right mind, dear. Let us go see Zeus and see if we cannot find a remedy for this little problem.” She said and smiled at her daughter reassuringly. Persephone hoped there was no remedy for it.
“How many of the seeds did you eat, Persephone?” Zeus asked as he leaned back in his throne. “I ate six seeds, Father.” She answered with her head down. “Why did you eat them? You knew what would happen.” He asked. “I… I… wanted to remain.” She answered weakly. “Do you see, Zeus? He has brainwashed her!” Demeter chimed in. “I am sorry but… whoever eats the fruit of the dead, must remain in the underworld.” Persephone’s eyes lit up upon hearing this. “But, if you remain in the underworld the earth will suffer… your mother cannot help her sorrow over not having you.” Zeus explained.
He scratched his beard thinking over the ordeal but being the cleverest of all the Gods, it did not take him long to think of a solution. “I cannot change the rules that Hades made about the fruit but I can tweak them…” He said. Persephone’s face paled. “Since you ate six seeds, then six months must you remain in the underworld, the other six you will be free.” He stated, and that was that. Persephone’s face lit up and she threw her arms around her father. “Oh thank you! Thank you!” She cried.
Demeter grimaced but realized that it was the best solution… and if her daughter was happy then she was happy. Through she still did not believe that her daughter could possibly have feelings for Hades.
“Demeter, I know you cannot help but mourn while she is away so I say that you should help the earth to survive during the cold months.” Zeus commanded and let Persephone go back to her mother.
Hades sat in his throne looking over the list of souls he had just written out, Hermes had kept him busy as of late but no matter how busy he was, his mind counted each day, each week and each month that passed without his Queen. He still could hear her laughter and that kept him from turning to stone completely but his heart had grown cold again and his lips never smiled, Cerberus could not even draw a smile from his Master.
The last name was filled out on the last line and the paper and brush vanished as Hades threw it to the ground. He had been sharp with the servants as of late and at times he felt he might cry but no tears came. Each and every place now reminded him of her, the only place safe from her memory was Tartarus but then… he remembered how much she hated that place. He rested his chin in his hand and closed his eyes and simply sat in silence as he did everyday now.
“My Lord…?” Hades did not open his eyes. “Hermes, I want no more souls right now. I am beginning to think you are killing people to keep me busy.” He grunted. “Oh I think you might want to see this one.” Hermes said not trying to hide his smile since Hades still had his eyes closed. “I doubt that.” Hades replied wryly. “My, you have become such a grump and I have only been gone six months!” A chipper female voiced sounded off suddenly. Hades eyes shot open instantly and his head lifted from his hand.
Hermes bowed and left the two as they both stared in silence at each other. “How…?” Hades asked finally. “I ate the fruit…” Persephone said slowly. Hades was already walking towards her; in fact, he had her in his arms before she could finish her sentence. Their lips met and met again. He swirled her around in his arms until she was laughing and then set her down again. “What of the earth… and your mother?” Hades asked in between trying to devour her lips. “Father made it so I will spend six months here and six months there... so the earth will have its green and warm times.
He also commanded that she share her golden seeds with men so they will know how to grow things on their own and not be lost in the cold times. I must thank your gardener too; he was right about what would happen...” Persephone said. Hades cocked his head. “Gardener?” He asked. Persephone nodded. “Yes, the one in your garden… that tends to the tree that bares fruit.” She said. “…I do not have a gardener…” He said. “Oh… but…” She started but lost her train of thought as her husband lifted her into his arms.
“It does not matter, what matters is that you are here and I have got to make up for six months of not being able to touch you, kiss you or praise you. I will send news to Charon to not let anyone pass the rest of today…” He said. “That is quite a lot of time...” Persephone giggled and rested her head against his shoulder. “And yet not nearly enough.” Hades admitted and kissed her as deeply as he could.
“For once you used one of your little tricks for something good, I see.” Hera said to Zeus as she passed him. “What on earth are you talking about?” He asked innocently. “Hades has no gardener… I wonder who convinced the girl to eat only six seeds so coincidently she would get to spend half of the year with her beloved and half with her mother.” She said with a smirk. Zeus winked. “You give me too much credit, my dearest.” He said and smiled.
The end.

Hades and Persephone
"Hades!" she screamed in rage. Silk curtains tore as nails were raked across them. Pillows were swept to the floor and set upon; with a ripping sound there were feathers adrift in the air.
She collapsed amid the chaos, sobbing. "I hate you. I hate you!" Her voice broke into the motionless air, hung amid the feathers, shivered in its anger.

He knew she thought he couldn't hear her, knew she thought he was elsewhere attending to business as usual--knew what she thought of him. There should have been fire. She was definitely expecting there to be blazing red fire, tortured souls, and Cerberus foaming at the mouth. Instead as she descended, trepidation eating away at her, she was surrounded by iridescent milky light filling a void of darkness. She clung to the stony wall as she continued slowly down the circling steps taking in the scene before her. Looking forward she was surprised by the layout before her. She paused for a moment taking in the landscape. Directly ahead of her was a forest of luminously vibrant trees. Leading from the steps and through those lustr

Hades and Persephone
A Hades in his own right
lonely and his nights were cold
though the friends of his childhood
kept careful watch o'er his treasures untold,
He found a maiden peaceful there
among the thick rich greens
and tempted her with flowers and jewels
and took her as though a fiend,
She withered in his castle
no light for her hair to glisten
but unlike the evil he so stood reflected
he took heart and stopped to listen,
He sent her back to home and heart
though she took his own in her hand
and once a year returned whistfully
to set a wint'ry glow about his land.
