Chapter 16: Hell hath no fury

“Hey Cas, the Priest is here!” Nicole yelled from the foyer. Cassy was in the middle of a breakdown when she heard her sister yell. Her mother was fussing about with the dress and veil while reminding her that she shouldn’t be wearing white. “Oh good! Oh Cassidy you will just love Father Shale; he is the most wonderful man.” Jackie said puffing the arms of Cassy’s dress. “Well he can just talk to Mael for a minute out there… my hair, oh how much worse could it look!!!” Cassy cried looking in the full length mirror in front of her.

“Oh come now, its not like you are a Queen getting ready to greet her subjects! It’s a wedding with family… besides, your hair looks better than it ever has!” Jackie stated with a wide smile. “I think I am going to faint…” Cassy uttered weakly. “Well that baby in there is probably not helping; it will make you moody too… God help the staff around here.” Jackie muttered. “Listen, I am sorry I got Pregnant without getting married first ok? Mael is very…Persuasive.” Cassy said in a frustrated growl.

“Mmhhh, it doesn’t help that he is handsome and blessed with a silver tongue either.” Jackie said. Cassy blushed slightly. “Well… its more than that, I feel like I have known him forever and it really feels right to be with him. Like its fate or something. I mean I never really thought about having children, but now… I just can’t wait.” Cassy said. She couldn’t hide the smile on her lips. Jackie started to smile too. “I think you will be a wonderful mother and I have never seen a man so happy to be a Father as Mael… especially since it was a surprise!” She laughed.

Mael was sitting in the study reading with Ailo. He had been long kicked out of the bedroom where Cassy was getting ready and he couldn’t go outside where the staff was setting up because the sun was still peeking over the city skyline. “Right this way Father.” They could hear Nicole say. “And it begins…” Mael said under his breath, causing a short chuckle from Ailo. Nicole entered the room first, leading the Priest in; Mael didn’t raise his eyes until The Father made a coughing noise in his throat.

“Mael, this is Father Shale, Father this is my Sister’s… fiancé, Mael Seraph.” Nicole chimed. For once the girl didn’t look like she was trying to catch a stray man; instead she was dressed rather nicely in one of the Bridesmaid’s gowns Cassy had picked out. “I know who he is.” Mael said and then looked back down at his book. Nicole and Father Shale exchanged confused looks briefly. After several minutes of agonizing silence Mael looked up again as if wondering why they were still there in the room. “I would come shake your hand Father but, you might burst into flames.” He said seriously. Ailo burst into uncontrollable laughter.

“OH FATHER SHALE!” The screeching voice of Cassy’s mother could be heard sailing down the stairs as she ran to meet them. Suddenly Mael got up and casually walked over to the bottom of the stairs from which the voice rang. He waited a minute then out stretched his arms. Father Shale stared is wonderment at the odd gesture. “She never remembers that the carpeting on the stairs sticks up a bit and…” He was cut off when Jackie landed in his arms. “Oh darn that step! Mael, you need to do something about that, what if Cassy came down and tripped on that, she is with child you know!” Jackie started then looked over to see Father Shale and Nicole staring.

Her face went red instantly. Mael lowered her and released her from his grip. “If I fixed it then I wouldn’t get the chance to catch you, Jackie my dear.” Mael said with a quick wink. Father Shale cleared his throat again and shot a wicked glare at Jackie. “Oh Mael!” She giggled then caught the look from the Priest. “Oh Father Shale, um… he is such a nice boy isn’t he? Have you two been properly introduced?” Jackie asked and started to pull Mael with her. He allowed it, he found her to be charming in a strange way.

“We were introduced somewhat.” The priest said eyeing Mael closely. “Mael smiled and offered his hand. Father Shale actually hesitated for a second then took the offered hand. “Well what do you know, nothing happened.” Mael said just loud enough for Father Shale to hear and then flashed a fangy grin. The Priest’s eyes went wide. “Uh… Jackie… can we talk outside please? I want to… uh… you… you left your Bible at the Church the other day and… uh yes… it’s in my car.” Father Shale stuttered trying to pull his hand away from Mael.

“Father… you don’t look well. Would you like something to drink, maybe some water?” Virgin blood perhaps? Mael asked. “What… what did you say?” Father Shale asked with disgust. Nicole and Jackie looked to one another in confusion. “I offered you a drink of water…don’t you like water?” Mael said innocently. “You… I…” Father Shale stammered. “We have many guestrooms, perhaps you need to lie down for a while… we still have some time before the ceremony.” Mael said. And while you sleep my many Brides with suck your blood from your veins and corrupt your soul.

“I would sooner sleep in Hell itself! Young man I don’t know where you get off trying to frighten me but I have the Lord behind me and you don’t frighten me one bit!” Father Shale raved. The room went silent. “Father…” Jackie started and reached out to touch his shoulder. He jerked as if he had been struck. Jackie smiled nervously. “Uh let’s go outside… shall we?” She said taking the priest by the arm and led him out of the room.

“I wonder what got him so spooked…” Nicole muttered as they passed. Mael smiled and returned to his seat. “It seemed as though he misunderstood me. Oh well, I am sure by the end of the night he won’t want to leave…” He said cheerfully. “That happens all the time around here.” Ailo added without lifting his eyes from his book. Nicole rubbed her arms, now feeling a little uncomfortable in the room alone with Mael and his lackey, especially after he told her he would have no problem killer her if she made him mad.

“I think I will go see what Cassy is doing.” Nicole said quietly and walked slowly out of the room. Ailo smiled suddenly. “You have her terrified.” He said. “Of course… speaking of Nicole, you caused me a lot of trouble last night, Ailo.” Mael said matter-of-factly. “Yes Master…” Ailo replied weakly. “I had to spend all night convincing my Queen that I had no intention of sleeping with her sister, and why, because you had to start screwing around with the little tart.” Mael growled.

Ailo lowered his head like a scolded puppy. “But Master, it’s been a long time since… well since I have had the chance to spend time with anyone. I didn’t even really have to ask her… it just happened!” Ailo said in a weak defense. “Remind me to punish you after this wedding. Honestly I don’t understand why we have to go through with this worthless human ritual to prove we have a bond… I think I have proved that over a hundred times since I met her.” Mael ranted.

“Well sir, I don’t think her mother would like to watch you and the Mistress have sex…” Ailo said timidly, not in his usual dry, cold tone. “No, they would rather make me stand outside for several hours with a damn holy man and tell her why I want to spend the rest of my life with her.” Mael grunted and lazily rested his chin in his hand. “Well why didn’t you tell, the Mistress, no when she asked for the wedding?” Ailo asked, glad he was not the center of his Master attention now.

Mael slowly rolled his head around to look at Ailo. “Because it is something that she wants, and her mother finds it a disgrace that Cassy is pregnant without being married first… I will never understand humans I suppose; they kill, rape and murder in the name of a peaceful God and yet become angry if someone shows an act of love prematurely.” He mused. “They are a strange people, my Lord.” Ailo said. “Well, I think we better get dressed, it is almost sundown.” Mael said and lazily lifted himself out of his chair.

“Right, Oh the Flower people haven’t arrived yet, sir. Should I phone them?” Ailo asked following close behind Mael. “No, Cassy said that they planned to bring the flowers right at sunset. Most likely she somehow found a flower shop that was owned by our own kind.” Mael said. A small smiled formed on his lips. “The future looks promising, Ailo, a Queen, a child and soon our kingdom. We are ever closer to our goal.” He stated proudly. “Yes my Lord. Once again you will be a God on earth. The Dogs and humans will bow to you as they once did.” Ailo said cheerfully.

“Indeed…” Mael said then headed up the stairs to change.
